The YEAR 5 & 6 children were left somewhat in the dark this week as they explored the reason for “Night and Day”. In the gloom of a damp hall, with the overhead projector as our Sun, the children used ‘lollipops’ (polystyrene balls on paintbrush handles) to discover more about the rotation of the Earth on its axis and how that causes night and day. We further explored why it is hotter and the daylight hours longer in our summer months compared to winter – some also began to realise that the polar regions experienced permanent day and night – all because of the tilt of the Earth.
